The village of Gordon was incorporated on November 19, 1885 and has grown into a second class city with a population of approximately 1,800. There are three parks, public tennis courts, 4 ball parks and a heated outdoor swimming pool that is open from late May until August. The auditorium of the Municipal Building provides an indoor basketball court and stage area for plays and concerts. The Gordon City Library was built in 1987 and is a modern state accredited facility. The Gordon Volunteer Rescue Squad serves the ambulance needs of the area. It has two fully equipped ambulances and sixteen emergency medical technicians. Fire protection is provided by the 40 member Gordon Volunteer Fire Department. Law enforcement and protection is managed by the Gordon Police Department. Gordon has a city manager-council form of government. The Council is made up of the Mayor and four Council members who set policy, approve budgets and generally oversee the conduct of government within the City. Council meetings are held the second Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers located in the Municipal building.
